17 - Explaining Bulbul Longa
Learning to play another piece by Amer Madi which is Bulbul Longa
Tareq:
Hello my name is Tareq Al Jundi from izif.com. Today in lesson number 17 we will learn another piece by Amer Madi, and we will come across some rhythmic notations that may be new to us, but they are basically derived from familiar ones. We will not learn them separately but we will deduce them as we can deduce any other notations.
Let us look at the piece in hand which is called Bulbul Longa. Bulbul Longa is based on Sultani Yakah or what we call Nahawand Sol or Harmonic Sol Minor *Play* which we used to play Longa Riyad Sunbati I lesson number 2.
Let us try to read what we have in the first verse rhythmically : Ta TiFi Ta Fa tifi Ta Tifi Tati Ta tifi Ta Tifi Ta Tifi Ta Tifi Ta Tifi Tati Tati Tati Ta Tifi Tati Tati Tati Tati Tati Tati Ta Fa Tifi Ta. This is the first new notation which we are unfamiliar with. Notice this notation which has 3 beams and another beam, those 4 beams have a 1/8 period each, they are 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 all together = ½, and the next one is ½, so when we read this bar it will be Tati Ta Fa tifi Ta, Tati Ta Fa Tifi Ta, this Ta Fa tifi Ta has a period of 1 beat. Next Tati Ta Fa tifi Ta Fa tifi Ta , this Ta as you can see is ¾ then pause with a period of ¼, and above it is a tr sign which mean trill, it is La, La Like this *Play* , but trill means this *Play* , which means that I alternate a frequency between this note and the one after it *Play* next Tati Tati Tati Tati Tati Tati Ta Fa tifi Ta and this Ta is the same thing ½ beat and ½ pause.
We will talk about an ornament that passed us. Let us try to read notes and then we will play it to show you the ornament 3 4 Sol Si La Sol La Si Do Re Si Do Re Si Sol Re Mi Do Do Re Si Si Do La La Si Sol Do Si La Si DO La Si DO Sol Do Si La SI Do Re Fa Mi Re Mi Fa Mi Re DO Si Do Si La Si, which is this, next Do Re Mi Fa Re Mi Do Re Si Do La La Sol Si Re Fa La Fa Re Si La Do Re Si Do La Si Sol. Let us try to play it slowly 3 4 *Play* the ornament here Re Mi , Mi is ♮ I played it with the first, Sol with Fa, I played Sol with the fourth, Re Mi Sol *Play* , Re Do *Play* again Re Mi Sol with Fa then, Mi Fa Mi *Play* Mi is ♭, Re Do Si La Si Do Si, Si Do Si La Si then Do Re *Play* La Sol *Play* from the top, continuous 1 2 *Play* this was the first verse.
Now to chorus, first of all we have this grace note, # Do with Re, Do Re *Play* which is Do Re SI Sol Re Do Re Si Sol Re , Ta tifi Tati Tati Tati then Tati Tati we have Si with Do *Play* with one strike *Play* Ta tifi Tati Tati Tati Ta Tifi Tati Trioli Trioli Tati Tati Ta Fa tifi Ta Ta Fa tifi Ta Fa tifi Ta Fa tifi Ta Fa tifi Ta Fa tifi Ta Fa tifi Ta Fa tifi Ta Trioli Trioli Trioli Trioli Trioli Ta. Now let us talk about those triplets here, first of all this trioli which is 3 noir notes with number three above, it has the period of 2 beats, trioli trioli, it is a big triplet, trioli. Next, as you can see each trioli after has the period of ½ , it is trioli trioli trioli ta trioli trioli trioli ta, each 2 triplets have the period of 1. The first one is trioli, trioli trioli trioli ta, what we have here will be as follows , trioli, ♭ Mi then ♮ Mi we will play it down up down, then trioli trioli trioli Ta *Play* Fa Sol Fa *Play* then Mi Fa Mi *Play* ♭ Mi Fa Mi *Play* Re *Play* I will play those 2 bars before I play the whole thing *Play* practice them *Play* then Ta Fa tifi ta Fa tifi Ta Fa tifi Ta Fa tifi Ta Fa tifi Ta Fa tifi Ta Fa tifi Ta Fa ti trioli ta *Play* here we have Re with Sol, Re with Sol , here is Re *Play*here is Sol, *Play*I will play them together simultaneously *Play* like this.
Let us try to play the chorus , 1 2 *Play* okay, let us talk about the most important points we have here. All the picks are written, fingers too, we know where to play half position, sometimes we play half position to make things easier; for example in the last 2 bars , when we play the big triplet *Play* I played it with the third and first, instead of fourth and second. Let us try to play the chorus continuously 1 2 *Play* now look at the second verse. Of course we have some transition notations here, let us read it slowly 1 2 Re Do Re Mi Re Do Re Si Si La Si DO Si La Si Sol , notice the transition notations, Sol Si La Si La Sol La Sol Fa Re Fa Mi Sol Fa Mi Fa Mi Re , next La Si Sol Fa Re Do Re Fa Re Do Re Fa Re Do Re Si Do Si La Sol Si La Do Si Re Do Mi Re Fa Sol Mi Fa re Re Fa La Do Re Do La Si Sol. Okay, let us look at the details. First of all we Re Do Re Mi, ♮ Mi with the fourth, *Play* Re Do Re si *Play* Si is ♮, then Si La Si Do, Si is ♮, La is # which is the same as ♭ Si , Si Do *Play* Si La Si Sol *Play* Sol Si, Si here is ♭ of course *Play* Re Fa Mi *Play* Mi is also ♭, then La Si Sol Fa Re *Play*Do Re Fa Re *Play* Do Re Fa Re *Play*Do Re Si Do Si La *Play* Do Re trioli Ta, which is Tati Ta Fa Ti Ta, Ta Fa ti Ta or trioli Ta, the most important thing is to match the periods. Then, Ta tifi Ta Fa tifi Ta Fa tifi Ta Fa ti Ta ti Tati Ta Fa tifi Ta. Let us play the second verse continuously *Play* notice how I played La Si Sol Fa Re Do Re Fa Re, I played it staccato, a bit of pause *Play* I played all picks down, for aesthetic purposes, I sacrificed the picks in favor of staccato *Play* here I played the same picks because this phrase has high tempo, I needed to get the period correct so I sacrificed the aesthetics to get it accurately. This concluded the first part of Bulbul Longa, which is the first verse, chorus and second verse. The third and fourth verse will be addressed in the next lesson.
