2.1 - Sultani Yakah Longa
Learn to play Sultani Yakah Longa by Riyad Al Sunbati. Tareq provides the details to play the first verse on Riyad’s Longa. Tareq: Hello my name is Tareq Al Jundi from izif.com, today in lesson no. 2, we will play “Sultani Yakah” Longa by Riyad Al Sunbati. Sultani Yakah scale is the same one as Sol Harmonic Minor that we learned in lesson no. 1 and practiced exercises on it. You will see how we will benefit from the exercises used on shifting , normal position and half position as well as when I get to the bracelet when we play this longa. Take a look at the first verse of the longa, as you notice on the sheet, we have ♭ Si and ♭ Mi, if I try to read it I have: Ta Ta tati Tati Ta Tifi Tati Ta Ta Tifi Ta Ti Ta Fa tiFi Ta, Tati Tati Tati Tati Ta Tifi Tati Teta Ti Ta Tati. All the pick directions are present, I also pointed out when we will use the first finger and where we have the half position. If I try to read it, as follows Re Si Sol Re Sol Si Re Mi Re Do Si Do La Fa Sol La Do Do Si Si La Si Re Mi Fa Sol La Si Do Re Mi Fa Mi Re Do Si La Sol Fa Mi Re. we will use the metronome on tempo 80 in order to play it *Play* this was the first verse. Notice that I started with the first finger. Why did I start off with the first finger in the first bar? *Play* I have ♮ Si with the third instead of fourth, and I have La with the first , so when I play Fa Sol La which is the last bar of the first line, Do I played it with the fourth Do Si Si La Si, like this. Then I descended the scale going back to the normal position *Play* I either play the Re here with the first finger, or the La with the first finger, and I prefer to take the half position form here *Play * then Mi Fa Mi Re Do, half position *Play* Si La, here I go back to normal position *Play* I will try to play it again because I want to give you some ornamentations that I have written on a separate sheet, on tempo 80. *Play*again *Play* When we start with this piece, we will surely not start off with tempo 80, I just want you to hear it as close as it should be. Look at the first bar, but we have to play it, in a basic format like this. Look at the first bar, where we have Re Si, we have here in lesson 2, Sultani Yakah Longa, bar no. 1 , in bar no.1 I have , instead of Re Si, I can play it as Ta Fa tifi Ta Fa tifi, instead of bar no.1 which I have here. Which will result in changing this *Play * to maybe this *Play* I will practice this slowly, Re with first finger and ♭ Mi as we know in half position. *Play * I play it again repeatedly *Play* until I am familiar with it. Now let us look at the scale we had here *Play* like this. I want to give you an ornamentation on this scale, as you have here written on this separate sheet. It is written as Re Mi Fa sol La Si Do Re Tati Tati Tati Tati, I wrote it as Ta Fa Tifi. Look here what we have, it is written here Re Re Mi Re Fa Re Sol Re La Re Si Re Do Re Re. Re is being repeated, this is call a pedal note, just like a repetitive pedal, for example in Fareed Al Atrash Takseem, he held the Do not *Play* this is called Pedal note, repetitive, Look here, we have Re 0, Re again 0, ♭ Mi with first, then Re, # Fa with first, on Re cord, Sol with second, on Re cord, La with first, on Re cord, ♭ Si with second on Re cord, Do with fourth on Re cord, then Re with first, which we explained previously, based on the deducted rule, between each note and the next, if we look at the bracelet, then we will find this note as an anser to the previous cord. If we look at this exercise as basic level, Re , ♭ Mi, # Fa, Sol with second, La with first, ♭ Si with second, Do with fourth, Re with first. *sing Re Re Mi Re Fa re Sol Re La Re Si Re Do Re Re*. let us try to play it along with the metronome Ta Fa tifi Ta Fa tifi *Play*again, of course I I will not practice it in this speed, I will practice it very slowly *Play* do not forget that the thumb descends diagonally, then pick up speed *Play*, now I have the first verse sounding like this *Play* then Mi Fa Mi Re Do Si La Sol Fa Mi Re, ♭ Mi will be played with the second, Do with fourth, Si La Sol Fa Mi Re. now here we have Re, ♭ Mi, Fa, so the exercise is Fa Mi Re Do Si La Sol. This exercise is not written but we will learn it, *Play* practice it very well. You will notice that if your hand is positioned this way *Play* the notes will be very low, so we play in this position *Play* now we have this verse sounding like this *Play* Mi Fa Mi Re Do *Play* Si La *Play* Sol is empty, now back to normal position. Let us play the first verse for the last time along with the metronome on tempo 80 *Play* this concludes the first verse of Riyad Longa. I leave you to practice slowly, I am showing you the piece on tempo 80, it is of course faster than this, but I am playing it on this middle tempo so as not to bore you. Not moving on to the chorus.
