19 - Al Huzam scale
in lesson 19, we learn a new scale called Al Huzam scale. We will learn it on 1/2♭Mi. we learn the notes forming the scale then we start with an exercise on Al Huzam scale, Maqsoum tempo. we will utilize the concept of syncopation. Tareq explains each bar rhythmically and names all the notes in it, then plays each bar while elaborating on the notes. he concludes as usual by playing the exercise continuously , non-stop, beginning to end in its required speed.

Hello my name is Tareq Al Jundi from i3zif.com. Today in lesson no. 19 we will learn a new scale which is Al Huzam scale. If we look at the note written here, Al Huzam scale we have ½ ♭ Mi and ½ ♭ Si in the scale key. It starts with ½ ♭ Mi …. Which was also in Rast scale… and Al Bayat.. ½ ♭ Mi .. Fa.. Sol… ♭ La.. ♮Si.. Do, Re… ½ ♭ Mi… this scale is basically a sub scale not a main one.. there is a common mistake where some people call it Sega scale.. it is not Sega scale, it is a derived scale, a sub scale from Sega scale.. remember when we had the Rast scale which is the main scale, in the first part, we had a sub scale derived from Rast called Soznak scale. Here we have Al Huzam scale. If we look at Sega scale we have ½ ♭ Si and ½ ♭ Mi, it starts with Mi ½ ♭, Fa… Sol.. ♮La, ½ ♭ Si.. Do.. Re.. ½ ♭ Mi… this is the Sega scale, in Al Huzam scale we changed starting from the third note Mi Fa So, excuse me from the forth note we played ♭ La, ♮Si, Do, Re, ½ ♭ Mi …. What I want to tell you is that each 4 note sequence in Arabic music is called genus, 3 note sequence is called routine, 5 note sequence is called chain.. here we saw Sega routine , which starts with ½ ♭ Mi, Fa, Sol… this is common with Sega scale, then later we have a change here , we have Hijaz genus, Sol , ♭ La, ♮Si.. this gives me the Hijaz routine.. then … Sega routine, when we combined it with Hijaz genus gives me a scale called Al Huzam. This scale has many songs applied to it, one of which is the song Lailet Mbareh Ma Ganeesh Nom by Sayyed Makkawi… it is based on ½ ♭ Mi. Um kulthoum also sang the song Al Atlal on this scale, which starts with Ya Fou’adi, but on a different note , and it has a different name as well.. which is … she sang it from here… same scale is reflected on ½ ♭ Si, ½ ♭ Si, Do Re ♭ Mi, # Fa, Sol La , ½ ♭ Si, same as huzam but go up a cord, and it gives a slightly different impression… when it starts on ½ ♭ Si, we call it Rahet El Arwah.. let us take a look , we have an exercise on Al Huzam scale based on Te Ta ti.. let us try to read it with the metronome 1 2 3 4 Do Mi Mi Do Mi, Do Mi Mi Do Mi, Re Fa Fa Mi Mi, Re Fa Fa Mi Mi, Mi Sol Sol Fa Fa, Mi Sol Sol Fa Fa, Si La Sol Sol Fa Sol Fa 1 2 3 4… Do Mi Mi Mi Mi, Re Fa Fa Fa 2, Sol Sol Sol Sol , Si La Sol Sol Fa Sol Fa 1 2 3 4. Let us try to play it… 1 2 3 4…1 2…1 2…1 2 3 4… this exercise was in very slow motion, with the metronome. Notice that when I play Do and Mi I hold my fingers , same thing we did in Ajam scale.. let me play it a bit faster… 1 2 3 4.. 1 2… 1 2.. 1 2 3 4… this concludes learning a new scale today which is Al Huzam scale with an exercise on it.. practice well because in the next lesson we will learn a very interesting application which is Marmar Zamani.
